Meta has acquired Egyptian voice AI startup PlayAI in a move to strengthen its position in the global generative AI race against rivals OpenAI and Google.
Founded by Mahmoud Felfel and Hammad Syed – also co-founders of Dubizzle – PlayAI is known for Play Dialog, a multi-turn speech model trained on hundreds of millions of conversations, capable of understanding context and conveying nuanced emotion. The startup also launched Play 3.0 mini, a fast, multilingual real-time text-to-speech model, as well as no-code voice agent tools and real-time APIs.
PlayAI had raised $21 million in seed funding from investors including Kindred Ventures, 500 Global, Y Combinator, and Race Capital.
Meta said the acquisition supports its roadmap across AI characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation. The entire PlayAI team will join Meta’s AI division, reporting directly to senior leadership.
