Google has quietly launched a new Android app called AI Edge Gallery, allowing users to run open-source AI models from Hugging Face directly on their phones – no internet required. An iOS version is expected soon.
The experimental app supports tasks like image generation, text editing, Q&A, and code writing by running compatible models offline using on-device hardware. It features shortcuts to tasks such as “AI Chat” and “Ask Image,” and includes Google’s Gemma 3n model among others.
Users can also explore the “Prompt Lab,” which offers task templates and settings to customize model behavior. Performance varies depending on device capabilities and model size, with larger models taking longer to process.
Available on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license, AI Edge Gallery invites feedback from developers as Google continues to experiment with on-device AI experiences.
