Morocco has joined global nonprofit Current AI as a founding member, signing a memorandum of understanding during the country’s first National AI Summit, in a major move to establish ethical, inclusive AI leadership across Africa.
The partnership, supported by Moroccan government funding, aligns the country with Current AI’s $400 million initiative – launched in Paris in February 2025 – to promote open, values-based AI development. Founding support came from the French government, philanthropic groups, and global tech firms.
“We take pride in welcoming Morocco as a founding member,” said Martin Tisne, president of Current AI’s steering committee. “This reinforces global cooperation guided by local values, languages, and histories.”
Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Minister Delegate for Digital Transition, called AI a transformative tool for sustainable development and cultural modernization. “AI opens tremendous opportunities to modernize our societies within an ethical and inclusive model that embraces our rich local characteristics,” she said.
Morocco’s participation in Current AI’s upcoming constitutional general assembly will formalize its role, with pilot projects focused on linguistic diversity, healthcare innovation, and algorithmic accountability.
The summit also highlighted Morocco’s ambition to become a continental AI leader, addressing the fragmentation of current initiatives and promoting a coordinated, sovereign digital strategy. Seghrouchni stressed the need to align Africa’s voice in global AI discussions while reducing dependence on foreign tech systems.
“This is not just about tech,” she said. “AI must serve as a social and cultural catalyst, not just an economic engine.”
The partnership positions Morocco as a leading advocate for ethical AI in Africa, committed to creating a digitally inclusive, cooperative, and globally connected future.
