As AI reshapes the workplace, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is urging the tech industry to ensure workers – not just CEOs – reap the benefits. In a recent interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, Sanders proposed a 32-hour workweek with no loss in pay, arguing that productivity gains from AI should translate into more free time for employees.
“Instead of throwing you out on the street, I’m gonna reduce your workweek to 32 hours,” Sanders said. “Let’s use technology to benefit workers. That means more time with your family, your friends, for education – whatever the hell you wanna do.”
While tech companies tout AI’s ability to boost output, Sanders warned against using it to cut jobs or intensify workloads. He noted that a shorter workweek isn’t radical, citing successful global pilots. In the UK, a 2022 trial involving 61 companies showed steady revenue and improved worker satisfaction. Microsoft Japan’s 2019 pilot reported a 40% productivity increase.
As the tech elite embrace AI to drive profits, Sanders is advocating for a more equitable approach – one that gives workers a fair share of time and prosperity in the AI-driven future.
