The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy and the Gates Foundation have launched the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence (AI) Scaling Hub, a major initiative to accelerate the responsible growth of AI solutions across key sectors like health, agriculture, and education.
Announced during an MOU signing ceremony in Abuja, the AI Scaling Hub aims to bring together government agencies, tech companies, academia, and development partners to coordinate and scale mature AI innovations nationwide. The Gates Foundation is backing the initiative with up to $7.5 million over the next three years.
“This hub will be a catalyst for Nigerian innovators,” said Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasizing its role in providing mentorship, resources, and infrastructure to translate AI ideas into real-world impact.
The project supports Nigeria’s broader digital agenda, including the recently drafted National AI Strategy, and seeks to position the country as a leader in responsible AI deployment in Africa.
Uche Amaonwu, the Gates Foundation’s Nigeria Country Director, said the hub will invest in local talent and ensure AI’s benefits reach underserved communities.
The Scaling Hub, in collaboration with Lagos Business School, offers a model for how governments and partners can jointly use AI to improve public services, boost productivity, and drive inclusive digital transformation.
