Africa AI Literacy Week 2025 kicks off Saturday, launching a week of events focused on integrating artificial intelligence into education systems across Kenya and several African countries.
Organized by Qhala in partnership with Datocracy, Panoply, Aga Khan University, Mtoto News, and innovation hubs like BongoHive Zambia and Galsen AI Senegal, the initiative runs June 21–28 under the theme “AI in My Language, My Classroom, My Future.”
“This is more than a campaign—it’s a movement to build African-led, responsible AI integration from early childhood to tertiary education,” said Barbara Osiro, project manager for Africa AI Week.
Activities span Nairobi, Kilifi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Mt. Kenya, as well as Senegal, Zambia, Togo, and online. Nearly 700 accredited teachers will receive foundational AI training to serve as multipliers in schools.
Key activities include:
- Train-the-trainer sessions for over 200 educators per site
- Hackathons for school and university students
- AI literacy workshops in urban and rural areas
- EdTech showcases and discussions on AI ethics in African contexts
“We’re shaping policy, training teachers, and influencing curricula,” said Qhala CEO Dr. Shikoh Gitau. “Africa must lead, not just consume, the future of technology.”
A policy roundtable in July will convene ministries, curriculum experts, and regional stakeholders to map AI’s role in Africa’s education future.
