Wikipedia has paused an AI-generated summary experiment following criticism from its editor community, according to 404 Media.
The test, which targeted users with the Wikipedia browser extension who opted in, placed AI-written summaries at the top of articles marked with a yellow “unverified” label. Users had to click to expand the summaries.
Editors quickly raised concerns about inaccuracies and the risk of undermining Wikipedia’s credibility. AI-generated content is known to occasionally produce false or misleading information, a problem other outlets like Bloomberg have faced in similar trials.
Despite pausing the pilot, Wikipedia says it’s still exploring AI tools for uses such as improving accessibility.
