Pope Leo XIV on Saturday urged world leaders to ensure that artificial intelligence serves humanity rather than diminishes it, warning especially of its impact on younger generations.
Speaking in Rome at a Jubilee event attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and delegations from 68 countries, the U.S.-born pontiff stressed that AI must remain a tool for human good—not a replacement for human potential.
“AI must not be forgotten as a tool for the good of human beings,” Leo said. “Our personal life has greater value than any algorithm.”
He contrasted AI’s “static memory” with the creative and dynamic nature of human memory, emphasizing the irreplaceable value of authentic human relationships.
Meloni voiced support, saying Italy would work nationally and internationally to ensure AI development remains governed by human interests.
Pope Leo, who ascended to the papacy in May, has repeatedly raised concerns about AI’s threat to jobs and society. He has previously called on journalists and policymakers to use AI responsibly.
