Google is expanding the capabilities of its Gemini AI in Drive to include video analysis, allowing users to ask questions or receive concise summaries without watching entire recordings.
Announced in a May 28 blog post, the update is designed to help users quickly extract insights from lengthy videos such as meetings, lectures or announcements. Previously, Gemini’s summarization features were limited to documents and PDFs stored in Drive.
Users can prompt the AI with questions like “Summarize the video” or “List action items from the meeting.” The feature is accessible through Drive’s overlay previewer or a standalone viewer in a separate browser tab. However, captioning must be enabled in the user’s domain for it to function properly.
The rollout began this week and is expected to reach all eligible users by June 19. Currently, it supports only English and is limited to those on Google Workspace and Google One AI Premium plans, or those using Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons.
To activate the feature, users can double-click a video in Drive and select the “Ask Gemini” option, indicated by a star icon. Admins must ensure smart features and personalization are enabled to allow access.
Google says the upgrade is part of a broader strategy to embed AI into daily workflows, making content easier to navigate and understand.
