When smallholder farmers in Malawi spot unusual signs on their crops, help is now just a click away. A new AI-driven app called Ulangizi – Chichewa for “advice” – is providing real-time agricultural support through WhatsApp. Available in Malawi’s most widely spoken language, the tool offers guidance on pest control, fertilization, livestock care and more.
Developed by Opportunity International Malawi, Ulangizi uses AI models like ChatGPT along with the country’s official farming manual to deliver local, relevant answers. Users can ask questions by text, voice or photo, and the app responds with tailored advice.
Over 80% of Malawi’s agricultural labor force are smallholder farmers, many of whom lack access to trained extension officers. A 2023 IFPRI report found only 13% of farmers regularly receive expert guidance due to limited staffing and resources.
The app played a key role after Cyclone Freddy in early 2023, helping displaced farmers recover from crop losses and build resilience. Opportunity International plans to expand Ulangizi with support for more crops, languages and offline features.
“This is just the beginning,” said Country Director Richard Chongo. “We want every smallholder farmer in Malawi to have access to the knowledge they need.”
