Meta has launched a new feature on WhatsApp called Message Summaries, which uses Meta AI to help users quickly catch up on unread messages – especially in busy group chats. The tool analyzes unread messages and generates a short summary so users don’t need to scroll through every message.
To protect privacy, the feature is turned off by default and must be manually enabled. Users can tap “Summarize Privately” at the top of an unread chat thread. Meta says the summaries are processed using Private Processing, meaning Meta and its AI cannot view the messages or summaries.
Users can also customize which chats use AI features through WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy settings.
Message Summaries is currently rolling out in English for users in the U.S., with broader international availability, including on Galaxy smartphones and tablets, expected later this year.
