The Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has launched the AgriConnect Initiative – an ambitious program to digitally empower Nigerian farmers through AI, smart devices, and real-time access to agronomic data.
Unveiled at the Cultural Centre Complex in Ogun State, the pilot is a collaboration between the Ministry, Huawei Technologies, and MTN Nigeria. It will initially support over 1,000 farmers selected from the Ogun State Farmers Information Management System (OGFIMS), which has over 160,000 registered farmers.
Each participant will receive mobile-data-enabled smart devices loaded with Huawei’s AI tools and MTN-backed connectivity. These tools are expected to enhance decision-making, reduce risks, and boost productivity in Nigeria’s agriculture sector.
“Productivity requires precision,” said Dr. Tijani, highlighting how AgriConnect aligns with President Tinubu’s push for food security and digital inclusion under the Renewed Hope Agenda. The goal is to scale the program nationwide.
Governor Dapo Abiodun hailed the initiative as a “game-changer,” especially for strengthening the cassava value chain in Ogun State.
The launch underscores Nigeria’s commitment to integrating technology into agriculture to boost efficiency, enhance rural livelihoods, and ensure long-term food security.
Notable attendees included Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, and House Committee Chair Hon. Adedeji Stanley Olajide.
