Social platform X has updated its developer agreement to block third parties from using its content to train large language models.
The new clause, added under “Reverse Engineering and Other Restrictions,” prohibits using the X API or any X content to fine-tune or train foundation or frontier models.
The change follows the March acquisition of X by Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI — a move that aligns with efforts to limit competitors’ access to platform data.
X had previously allowed public data to be used for AI training, updating its privacy policy in 2023 and loosening restrictions for third parties in October.
Other platforms are making similar moves: Reddit has introduced protections against AI crawlers, and The Browser Company recently added AI-related limits to the terms for its Dia browser.
