National strategies have laid foundations around infrastructure, skills, data and regulation, but success will depend on productive adoption that improves businesses, strengthens institutions and creates scalable African companies. The opportunity lies not in competing to build frontier models, but in applying AI to sectors where Africa has deep knowledge and urgent challenges, from agriculture and healthcare to mining, logistics and finance. Crucially, adoption must reach small and informal businesses. For governments, the priority is enabling infrastructure, trusted rules, public data and markets—not directing innovation.
Africa’s AI ambitions face a growing power grid challenge ahead
The continent’s data centre demand is projected to rise from about 0.4 gigawatts today to as much as 2.2 gigawatts by 2030, requiring billions of dollars in investment. The World Economic Forum argues that African countries have an opportunity to get ahead of the challenge by planning energy and digital infrastructure together. Strategic AI and data centre zones, stronger transmission networks, regional power integration and greater efficiency could help meet rising demand without placing additional pressure on households. The message is clear: Africa’s AI race will depend on power.
