The Democratic Alliance (DA) has accused Public Works Minister Sihle Zikalala of lying about the government’s efforts in combating the construction mafia.
The construction mafia were armed organizations who targeted government construction projects, demanding enormous sums of money from corporations that were given tenders.
After Zikalala stated that over 200 arrests had been made in connection with the construction mafia, the party vowed to submit a complaint with the public protector.
According to the DA, Zikalala failed to offer substantial evidence that these arrests were made.
The party charged the Public Works Minister with violating the executive code of ethics by allegedly misleading the public about the arrests of construction mafia members.
While Zikalala’s department disputed the party’s assertions, the DA’s Sello Seitholo insisted on a concerted effort to inflate the number of arrests.
