UNESCO Report: Africa, a New Global Fashion Leader

A new report delivered by Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO’s Director-General presents evidence that Africa’s fashion industry is poised for greatness, but requires public support to achieve its fullest potential. Already established as a major producer of raw materials and exporter of textiles, the continent is also experiencing a growing interest by young consumers in locally produced fashion, as well as a global fascination with the innovative styles exploding from Africa’s talented designers. As evidenced by the 32 Fashion Weeks held each year, Africa is also brimming with talent in the fields of haute couture, crafts and clothing. A 42% increase in demand for African haute couture is expected over the next 10 years.
