The race for original African content is on, and Netflix is leading the pack with a slew of new offerings. Whether developed fully by the streaming giant or acquired for distribution, the works reflect new voices from the continent and represent exciting new opportunities for African content creators. Kemi Adetiba’s 2018 box office hit, King of Boys was identified by Netflix as a franchise starter and plans for a feature sequel were immediately put forward. A welcome addition to Netflix’s ballooning content library of reality television series, Young, Famous & African has the good sense to make a surface level celebration of extravagance and celebrity instantly arresting.
