The US will be sending 300,000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines to South Africa as a matter of extreme urgency.
That’s while South Africa’s Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) evaluates J&J vaccines stored in the Eastern Cape.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved some batches of the vaccine.
But several others are not suitable for use after they got contaminated at its Baltimore factory.
About two million J&J vaccines are being stored in Gqeberha.
SAHPRA will now have to determine if they are safe for use.
