South Africa will be hosting Africa’s first COVID-19 vaccine facility.

The World Health Organisation and its Covax partners are working with a number of South African consortiums to establish a technology transfer hub.

The aim is to boost COVID-19 production and supplies to the continent.

African countries have had the least access to vaccines.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is hailing it as a landmark initiative.

“This is the start of the process, as we work together to respond to this grave global crisis, we see this as laying a firm foundation for the achievement of health security for the world’s most vulnerable people,” he said.

“In the achievement of this goal, we will not fail. We thank you once again for this opportunity.”
