The National Institute for Communicable Diseases reports that 9 149 new COVID-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, which represents a 15.7% positivity testing rate.
This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 1 722 086.
12 044 072 tests have been conducted in both public and private sectors as per the table below.

South Africa technically entered the third wave today as the national 7-day moving average incidence (5959 cases) now exceeds the new wave threshold as defined by the Ministerial Advisory Committee. The MAC advisory defined the new wave 7-day moving average threshold as 30% of the peak incidence of the previous wave.
There was an increase of 844 admissions in the past 24 hours and 127 additional in-hospital deaths reported in the past 24 hours. A summary of reported COVID-19 hospital admissions is shown below.
