Efforts are underway to extinguish a blaze at the Rhodes memorial in Cape Town.
A part of the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant on the slopes of Table Mountain has been destroyed by a fire that has continued to spread through the area.
City of Cape Town fire and rescue services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said, “At about 08:45 am the City’s fire and rescue was alerted to a vegetation fire above Phillip Kgosana Drive. Fire crews were immediately dispatched to the scene, with the fire currently spreading from Rhodes Memorial towards the University of Cape Town. A section of the tea room at Rhodes Memorial has been destroyed, and people are urged not to enter the area.”
He said no injuries have been reported. According to the Table Mountain National Parl, an initial investigation showed the blaze might have been sparked by a vagrant.
The fire is said to be spreading into residential areas. It has also led to evacuations at the university.
At least two buildings are reported to be on fire at the University of Cape Town.
Reports said Fuller House – a student residence – was on fire – but all students were evacuated.
This comes after at least two floors at the Jagger Library were destroyed.
The library has been the home of many special collections and manuscripts.
The historic Mostert’s Mill was also destroyed.
The City of Cape Town said one firefighter has so far sustained burn wounds trying to beat back the blaze and was transported to hospital for treatment.
