The sex trafficking trial against Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso would resume next month. The Durban based pastor made a brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth High court on Tuesday.
He was arrested at Port Elizabeth International Airport in April 2017 and two women – who allegedly recruited girls and women for sexual exploitation – were arrested months later. The women were out on bail.
The accused face a string of charges, including human trafficking and rape.
The matter would continue on 24 February 2020. The State requested the postponement in order for them to prepare witnesses.
Tuesday’s hearing came after the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) dismissed the trio’s application earlier this month relating to the jurisdiction of the Port Elizabeth High Court.
They had questioned whether the High Court had the jurisdiction to preside over all the charges as some of the alleged offences had occurred outside of PE. But, the ConCourt ruled there was no reasonable prospect of success.
