At the GoldOne-East Modderfontein mine, a scenario is developing on Monday because more than 500 mine workers have not come back to the surface after their shift.
According to mine management, Amuc (Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union) representatives have kidnapped other people.
Amcu claims it is still attempting to determine precisely what took place. The National Union of Mineworkers (Num) is the primary union on the mine, according to Jonathan Hericourt, but there has recently been a movement to recognize Amcu, which has resulted in a number of legal actions.
He claims that the union requested permission to strike from the courts last week, and that the decision is still pending.
Meanwhile, he claims that Amcu agents are imprisoning certain employees who worked the night shift yesterday.
He claims there are about 540 individuals underground, though it is unknown how many are being held and by whom.
Jeff Mphahlele, the general secretary of Amcu, was unable to offer any additional information at this time.
He explained that the union had only spoken to the mine management so far, and he still hoped to be able to visit the site and talk to those involved this afternoon.
