More Woes for Conakry’s Former Strongman

Guinea’s ruling junta has ordered new charges to be brought against former president Alpha Condé, whom it overthrew in a coup d’état in 2021, for alleged acts of “treason”, a letter from the justice minister to the Conakry public prosecutor said on Tuesday. The former head of state from 2010 to 2021, who has been in exile in Turkey since he was ousted, is already being prosecuted for alleged “corruption”, as well as “murder, torture, kidnapping and rape”, in a country where the repression of political demonstrations is often brutal.
