Ghana to Face Three More Weeks of Electricity Disruptions

Ghanaians are bracing for more disruptions in power supply as electricity distributors announce increased load management due to maintenance work by a gas supplier in Nigeria. The blackouts, known locally as “dumsor,” per the Akan language, are exacerbating struggles for businesses amidst the country’s worst economic crisis in a decade. The Ghana Grid Company and Electricity Company of Ghana cited maintenance work in Nigeria as the reason for the three-week load management. This news has frustrated Ghanaians who, despite the country’s relatively advanced electrification, suffer chronic power shortages due to old and poorly maintained power plants that are finding it hard to keep up with the country’s growing power demands. According to Ben Boakye, the executive director of the Africa Center for Energy Policy, the government must invest in renewable energy and upgrade the existing power plants to fix the outages.
