The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated annually on 22 May, is “We are part of the solution”. Climate change and the destruction of our natural resources are pressing global issues and we can all play our part. As we mark this day, here are some ways in which you can be part of the solution:
It’s up to every one of us to do whatever we can to ensure that our natural world doesn’t become something that our future generations experience only in books and or on the internet.
Wear a symbol of support
Buy Relate bracelets for yourself and for all your friends to wear. Inspired by the colours of nature, proceeds from this bracelet support the work of the Endangered Wildlife Trust while also creating earning opportunities for some of South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens. Bracelets are on sale for as little as R30 each on the Relate bracelets website.
Educate yourself – and those around you
Learn more about International Day for Biological Diversity. It is imperative that we continue to spread factual information about how we can help preserve our biodiversity, and why conservation efforts are so important. Only once we have all the facts at our fingertips can we encourage our friends, families and communities to take the problem as seriously as it warrants. That way, we’ll also be up to speed about all the ways in which we can help make a difference. Together we can protect our planet.
Small ways in which you can make a big difference
There are plenty of ways in which you can help preserve the environment. One small step you can take is to use reusable shopping bags. Plastic bags that get thrown out end up in landfills or in other parts of the environment. These bags suffocate animals who get stuck in them or may mistake them for food and it takes years for these bags to decompose. Another great way to help out would be to participate in beach cleanups in your area. This awesome initiative doesn’t only help our natural habitats immensely, but it’s also really fun to do with your family and friends.
Spend the day in nature
Another great way to appreciate everything nature has to offer is to spend some quality time in it. Whether it’s at the beach, on a hiking trail or in your backyard. Spending more time outdoors also does wonders for our physical and mental wellbeing, it reduces our blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.
