Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) say the increase in positive COVID-19 cases are a cause for concern.
The NICD says the last week saw a 46 percent increase in coronavirus cases compared to the previous week.
The Northern Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo are topping the list of new infections.
While there hasn’t been an increase in hospitalisations, the NICD says there’s been an 18 percent increase in COVID-related deaths compared to the previous week.
Mkhize said most concerning is the discovery locally of the Indian and UK variants.
The minister said R9-billion has already been allocated to fight the pandemic.
