"We started flying to Zanzibar on a charter basis at the beginning of the year and we were very pleased with the uptake on our flights," says Rodney James, CEO of 1time. "However, as airlines do, we stopped flying during their monsoon season, and have resumed flights now on a scheduled basis."
Currently the airline has two flights weekly to the island, on a Saturday and Tuesday. The weekly flights depart Johannesburg at 7.45am arriving Zanzibar at 11.15am, with the return departing Zanzibar at 12.30pm, arriving Johannesburg at 4pm.
"We decided to fly this route because the destination has become increasingly popular with travellers across South Africa and when you see the beaches there, one understands why this is so," explains James.
With its sweeping white beaches and quaint villages steeped in local history it’s easy to see why the island has become the latest holiday trend. It offers everything that Mauritius and Madagascar boast about, only at a more affordable rate.
The country of Zanzibar is part of the East African republic of Tanzania. There are numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, informally referred to as Zanzibar), and Pemba.
1time has also collaborated with a number of local tourism companies and hotels, so that travelling to Zanzibar is made that much easier. "It’s still about 'More nice. Less price.' just with an island flavour thrown in for good measure," says Rodney.
"We are extremely excited to be flying to Zanzibar once again. We have had plenty of positive feedback from passengers regarding the introduction of this route and have no doubt that it will continue to grow in popularity," concludes Rodney.
