Johannesburg’s boutique hotel, The Peech, has launched six new 'low carbon footprint' rooms.

The brainchild of owner James Peech, the hotel's new eco-wise accommodation wing comprises four luxury double en-suite rooms and two spacious 60m² suites. Each suite is further enhanced with a private garden.

Says Peech: "A stay in one of our new rooms offers as low an impact on the environment as is currently feasible in South Africa. Water heating is generated via solar energy, while rain water and 'grey' water from the baths and showers is processed and recycled for use on the garden. This will help to lessen the hotel's environmental footprint by saving on the city treating sewage water and processing new water simply for use in garden irrigation."

While carbon emissions are down, style in the new rooms is hotter than ever!

Interiors boast the same chic and contemporary feel as the rest of the hotel — only, this time, the look is more refined. Expect designer bathrooms and rooms finished in a neutral palette that is brought to life with vibrant splashes of colour and ultra-stylish design pieces like hanging bubble chairs. Huge picture windows with views onto The Peech's lush landscaped gardens complete the scene.

And the architectural style? While the exterior of the new rooms has been designed to blend in with existing hotel structures, inside guests can anticipate a showcase in the ultimate design for luxury hotel living.

Other eco-living strategies currently in operation at The Peech Hotel include:

  • Reducing Electricity Consumption — this has been achieved through: solar geysers, the installation of motion sensors to switch lights on and off, and the use of energy efficient lighting
  • Water Saving — the hotel utilises a grey water system and each bathroom is finished with water-efficient dual-flush toilets
  • Worm Farming — organic waste is recycled into a worm farm for later use as garden compost
  • Eco Cleaning — the use of ecological detergents and cleaning agents
  • Bore-hole Irrigation — saving on water treatment, The Peech only irrigates their gardens with bore-hole water
  • Herb garden — wherever possible, vegetables and herbs used at The Peech are grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden. Alternatively, they are sourced locally
  • Recycling — of cans, paper, cardboard, glass and some rainwater
  • Energy-efficient insulation — double insulation layers have been installed in most of the hotel to minimise excessive heat in summer and reduce heat-loss in winter
Always seeking new ways to tread more lightly on the Earth, apart from the recent construction of the hotel’s new carbon-friendly rooms, next year The Peech also plans to help reduce carbon emission by sponsoring the purchase of bicycles for a 'Bike to Work' initiative.
