Google launched an online encyclopaedia in a bid to dethrone Wikipedia.

Knol, derived from the word "knowledge" differs in that it sets out to both reward contributors and allows for better control over articles, reports TechTree.com.

The group of authors who created a specific article are allowed control over any moderations made to it. A rating system will allow quality assurance seeing as multiple articles can be submitted on any given topic.

The new website rewards contributors by giving them the opportunity to make money from their articles, through getting a share of the revenue from ads sold through those articles, according to the Wall Street Journal.

With a Gmail account registered, you can get in on the action in a jiffy, reports PCWorld. But getting in on the money will require registering for Google's AdSense program too.
