Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is to undergo ankle surgery in Amsterdam on Monday, the hospital where he is being treated confirmed.

Hospital press spokesman Johan Kortenray said that the operation would be carried out during the morning after the Portuguese star had travelled to the Netherlands late Sunday.

Kortenray said that Ronaldo would likely be released to go home on Tuesday.

The operation was arranged after the view of a specialist backed up that of medical staff from both Manchester United and the Portuguese Football Association.
