Premier Soccer League (PSL) Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has congratulated Bay United on their elevation to the Absa Premiership for the 2008/2009 season.
This comes after the Port Elizabeth-based side beat FC AK 2-1 in the second leg of the Promotion Play-off Final on Sunday, after the first leg ended in a scoreless draw a week earlier, to book themselves a spot in the lucrative top flight.
"I'd like to congratulate Bay United on reaching the PSL. It's certainly a remarkable achievement for the team from Port Elizabeth who've made it to the lucrative Premiership at their first attempt in the play-offs," said Khoza.
He added: "It also goes to prove that the National First Division is a strong league as Bay United had to overcome teams from the PSL to confirm their spot."
Khoza also praised the Port Elizabeth soccer fans for rallying behind United.
"The fans came out in their numbers to support Bay United and this augurs well for the team
as the league spreads its wings to another province.
"We certainly look forward to Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape becoming part of our landscape in the upcoming season."
However, a small headache now awaits the PSL as both teams that were relegated are Inland Stream teams, while the two promoted teams come from the Coastal Stream.
"This creates an imbalance for the NFD, but we will discuss this matter at the next PSL Executive Committee meeting on the 31 July, 2008, and will come up with a solution as soon as possible," concluded Khoza.
