Manchester United proved why they are regarded as the best team in the world by handing Kaizer Chiefs a 4-0 drubbing in the Vodacom Challenge Final at Loftus Stadium on Saturday.
'Amakhosi', who promised much in the tournament, were out-thought, outclassed and outdone by the 'Red Devils', in a very one-sided match.
United made their intentions clear in as early as the fifth minute when Wayne Rooney tried to chip Chiefs’ goalkeeper, but the ball went over the crossbar.
Rooney almost redeemed himself a minute later when he pounced onto a loose ball, but his shot went narrowly wide of goals.
The England striker continued to pose problems for the Chiefs defence, when he beat his marker in the 24th minute before unleashing a powerful shot that was saved by Khune.
Chiefs were awarded a free kick in a promising position in the 39th minute and Siphiwe Tshabalala almost put Chiefs ahead from that free-kick, but his shot went narrowly past
the upright.
Veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs finally put United in the lead a minute later when he unleashed a powerful volley that beat Khune hands down.
The score remained 1-0 in favour of United at half-time.
The 'Red Devils' continued to put Chiefs under pressure in the second half and that pressure paid off in the 57th minute when Rooney beat the offside trap and coolly slotted the ball past Khune.
Substitute Cleverley made it 3-0 for United five minutes later, when he capitalised on poor defending from Chiefs, who failed to clear Simpson's cross.
This goal took the wind out of Chiefs’ sails and just when they thought things would not get any worse, substitute Campbell made it 4-0 for United and that was game set and match for the 'Red Devils', who are now the new Vodacom Challenge champions.
