Bafana Bafana’s golden striker, Benni McCarthy has rubbished comments by Blackburn Rovers that he was "over-weight and not match-fit".

This comes after a Blackburn spokesperson said that McCarthy's physical condition was the reason why he has not featured for Rovers in the English Premier League this season.

However, McCarthy, speaking on Robert Marawa's Discovery Sports Centre show on Metro FM on Wednesday night, lambasted Blackburn for — according to him — "not telling the truth".

"How can I be match fit if I am not playing? I will only be match fit if I am playing and that is not the case at Blackburn at this moment," he said.

McCarthy added that he viewed these comments by Blackburn as a sign that the club was no longer interested in his services.

"It's clear that my career has been blown out the window and with the transfer window already closed it will be a matter of waiting and seeing for me.

"Who knows what will happen in six months' time, maybe one striker will be injured and I will get a chance to play. Or maybe there will be teams interested in me," explained McCarthy.

When asked whether he would actually quit Blackburn, McCarthy replied: "It's like I said, maybe they will change their minds once they see what I can do.

"For now I'm concentrating on helping Bafana Bafana to qualify for the Afcon starting with this Saturday's match against Nigeria.

"A lot has been said by Nigeria, but I can tell you, we are definitely not scared of them. We respect them, but we are not scared of them. They respect us too you know. They know that we have a good young team that has potential," concluded McCarthy.
