Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has made four changes, including the selection of Zimbabwean import Tendai Mtawarira, to his team for the second Test against Wales at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.
Loosehead prop Mtawarira, affectionately known in rugby circles as Beast, joins fellow Zimbabwean Brian Mujati as the latest intake in the Green and Gold club. Mujati made his debut at tighthead in the first Test in Bloemfontein last week, whilst this week Mtawarira replaces Gürthro Steenkamp in the number one jersey. Mtawarira is the only new cap in the team. Other changes to the starting XV will see Ricky Januarie starting at scrumhalf in place of Bolla Conradie, Victor Matfield regaining his place at lock at the expense of last week's debutant Andries Bekker and BJ Botha replacing Mujati at tighthead. On the bench there is a welcome return for mercurial utility back Francois Steyn and number eight Ryan Kankowski. Steenkamp, Bekker and Conradie drop down to the bench — with prop CJ van der Linde, utility forward Danie Rossouw, as well as utility backs Ruan Pienaar and Peter Grant being axed from the matchday 22 altogether. Springbok captain John Smit will play in his 75th Test as hooker, joining All Black legend Sean Fitzpatrick as the third most capped captain in international rugby with 51 Tests. Smit needs one try to equal the South African record of five for most Test tries as a hooker. The return of Matfield means he will lock the scrum with Bakkies Botha for a record 37th time in the starting XV. Flank Juan Smith, who will play in his 44th Test, needs one try for most Test tries as a Springbok flank. South Africa: 15 Conrad Jantjes, 14 Tonderai Chavhanga, 13 Adrian Jacobs, 12 Jean De Villiers, 11 Bryan Habana, 10 Butch James, 9 Ricky Januarie, 8 Pierre Spies, 7 Juan Smith, 6 Luke Watson, 5 Victor Matfield, 4 Bakkies Botha, 3 BJ Botha, 2 John Smit (captain), 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
