The woman who alleges she was raped by four England rugby players sought hospital treatment after leaving Auckland's Hilton Hotel last Sunday.

The Sunday Star-Times reports police are investigating allegations the woman, an Auckland bar worker, was raped by the four in the early hours of Sunday morning at the team hotel, the night after England was beaten by the All Blacks at Eden Park.

They are yet to receive a formal complaint from the woman.

She was one of several women who had been drinking with English players at Auckland nightclub Pony after the game, and later accompanied them back to the Hilton around 4am.

It is understood that after she left the hotel, she sought medical treatment and made her allegations to police late on Sunday night. She was then medically examined by police doctors. It is not known what, if any, injuries she had.

It is believed two of the players the woman say raped her maintain they had consensual sex with her.

On Saturday it emerged that All Blacks including Dan Carter and Ali Williams were at Pony drinking with the English players. The All Blacks did not go back to the Hilton, and have said they will co-operate should police want to talk to them.

British interest in the case is intense, with six tabloid newspapers in New Zealand chasing the woman, and reports in England that the scandal was damaging the game.

The English team has laid low since the allegations emerged on Wednesday, but yesterday the Guardian reported the players were desperate to prove their innocence.

They were unhappy at the prospect of flying home with the situation unresolved, the English Rugby Union's chief executive Francis Baron said.

"If a complaint is not made in the next two to three days, I'm sure our legal team will be pressing police to close the file because it is a very unusual situation," Baron said. "In our view those boys are innocent.

"These things are damaging. We're also very conscious of any embarrassment we're causing our New Zealand hosts".

The players three of whom are said to be close friends have declined to speak to police, but their inquiries are continuing.

The English team is due to leave New Zealand on Sunday, after losing the second Test against the All Blacks 44-12 in Christchurch on Saturday.
