Peter de Villiers' Springbok squad will have two extra bodies in the training mix ahead of the second Test against Wales.

Springbok communications manager Chris Hewitt revealed that Sharks wing JP Pietersen and Stormers hooker Schalk Brits will be included in the Bok training squad ahead of the second Test against Wales in Pretoria on Saturday.

Both Brits and Pietersen were in Bok coach Peter de Villiers' initial Springbok training group, but neither made the cut when De Villiers trimmed the wider group to 30 players ahead of the Wales and Italy Tests.

Coach De Villiers explained at the time of Pietersen's axing that he was left out of the group for conditioning reasons, but that the World Cup-winner would be monitored closely.

Hewitt confirmed these statements, and explained the rationale behind the decision to include the two players.

"JP and Schalk are both in contention for selection," Hewitt told the media on Tuesday.

"JP was a vital part of our World Cup win and it would be absurd to just abandon him. He knows he is part of our plans, but by his own acknowledgement he was not in the best conditioning in the pre-season.

"The decision to keep him with the squad is more to monitor him, to make sure he is keeping to the conditioning programs he has been given and to keep him in the right mindset," Hewitt added.

Bok captain and hooker John Smit is of course not available for Springbok selection for the Italy Test.

Smit must complete his contractual club commitments with French outfit Clermont Auvergne, and will play for the club in France's Top 14 semifinals on the same weekend that the Boks face Italy.

"We're going to lose John Smit shortly for his French commitments and it makes sense for Brits to get familiar with the lineout calls," explained Hewitt.

Smit's absence will also affect the Springboks in terms of scrumming, an area where they struggled in the first Test against Wales.
