South Africa's preparations for their one-off Test against Argentina and the home leg of the Tri-Nations got off to a rocky start, with flyhalf Peter Grant and loose forward Ryan Kankowski both forced to withdraw from the Springbok squad through injury.
Following a medical examination and further assessment by a specialist, Grant will undergo a surgical procedure to remove scar tissue and bone fragment present in his right shoulder AC joint. The key-hole surgery required will be conducted in the next 48 hours. The prognosis is good and Grant should make a full recovery in six to 12 weeks. However, this means he will play no part in the Mandela Challenge or the remainder of the Tri-Nations. Kankowski suffered a grade two sprain of his sterno-clavicular joint (shoulder) during the Sharks' 16-11 win over the Lions in a Currie Cup encounter last Saturday. He will undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Sharks medical staff and is expected to recover in two to three weeks. Springbok coach Peter de Villiers confirmed he will not call up a replacement for Grant at this stage, and no decision has been taken yet on a replacement for Kankowski. It is expected that utility back Ruan Pienaar will be given a run in the number 10 jersey against Argentina in Johannesburg on 9 August9, as the Bok coach continues to search for a suitable back-up to Butch James. Francois Steyn is also in line for a run at flyhalf again.AFP
