Sharks captain Johann Muller, a one-time Springbok captain who was dropped from the national team this year, is convinced South Africa can record back-to-back away victories when they meet Australia in a Tri-Nations clash in Perth on Saturday.

The Boks have an excellent Tri-Nations record in Perth, with their only Test wins in Australia over the past decade having been at the Subiaco Oval, venue for Saturday's big showdown.

There was the 22-19 triumph three years ago and a 14-13 victory in 1998.

In the other two Perth Tests the Springboks drew 14-14 in 2001 and lost a close game 26-30 in 2004.

The Boks can also look forward to fervent support from the significant South African expatriate community now residing in Western Australia.

"Perth is a great venue for the Boks," Muller told this website on Tuesday.

"It's been a happy hunting ground for the Springboks and I think the guys have a very good chance of winning there again," he added.

Muller regrettably missed selection for the Tri-Nations tour, but still maintains a close relationship with fellow World Cup winning compatriots, amongst them being the injured first choice hooker and Springbok captain, John Smit.

"I've just got off the phone with John," Muller exclaimed.

"He is very frustrated not being able to be there with his team, but says he is recovering well and the pain is subsiding," Muller said of the groin surgery Smit, following the vicious spear tackle by All Black lock Brad Thorn in the opening round in Wellington.

When asked how he sees the Tri-Nations unfolding, the Sharks lock confirmed the Springboks' status as world champions.

"Last Saturday's victory in Dunedin was unbelievable," he said.

"It was a great result for Peter [De Villiers], as no-one gave him a chance.

"The Wallabies are going to be equally tough opposition this weekend. They're improving at one hell of a rate and the Robbie Deans influence is certainly starting to show.

"But I think the Boks have a very good chance of winning the tournament. Their display at Carisbrook showed why they are the world champions," Muller concluded.
