South Africa captain Graeme Smith will miss Friday's third One-Day International against England as he struggles to recover from a tennis elbow injury.
Long-time skipper Smith was due to see a surgeon on Thursday to decide whether he will need an operation to cure the problem.
The opening batsman has no chance of featuring at The Oval and is unlikely to take any further part in a series England lead 2-0 with three matches to play.
Jacques Kallis has been confirmed as stand-in skipper in Smith's absence.
Kallis has captained his country in seven One-Day Internationals since 2006 and the star all-rounder is determined to put the pressure back on England as they try to clinch the one-day series.
"We have got to come up and play some good cricket," Kallis told Sky Sports News.
"The pressure is on England to win the series. I think it's going to be a tough couple of games."
