The SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee on Thursday revealed the names of the athletes that will make up the final component of Team South Africa at the Beijing Olympic Games.
Teams announced were: Athletics (track and field and the marathon), women's road cycling, BMX, rowing, tennis, triathlon, and weightlifting, while additions were made to the aquatics team. It will be the first time that BMX cycling will be included in the Games and Sifiso Nhlapo becomes the first South African to represent the country in this code. He will be supported by Herve Krebs, as the coach. Athletics: Track and Field (men): Pieter de Villiers (400mH), Alwyn Myburg (400mH), Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (800m), Samson Ngoepe (800m), Ruben Ramolefi (3000m SC), Khotso Mokoena (long jump), Robert Oosthuizen (Javelin), Thuso Mpuang (200m), LJ van Zyl (400mH), Juan van Deventer (1500m) Track and Field (women): Isabel le Roux (200m), Tsholofelo Thipe (400m), Elizna Naude (discus), Rene Kalmer (1500m). In the marathon, Norman Dlomo and Hendrick Ramaala will don the green and gold for Team SA. The athletics team will be accompanied by team manager, Kakata Maponyane and head coach Ekkart Arbeit who will be supported by coaches Wilfred Daniels, Magda Botha and JP van der Merwe. Track and field athletes, who qualify according to the IAAF A standard from now until 22 July, may still be submitted to SASCOC for inclusion in the final team. The final (IOC) deadline for track and field athletes to qualify is July 31. Road cycling (women): Marissa van der Merwe and Cherise Taylor Rowing: Rika Geyser (heavyweight woman's single scull), Kirsten McCann and Alex White in the (heavyweight woman's double scull). Ramon di Clemente and Shaun Keeling will represent in the heavyweight men's coxless pairoar. The rowing team will be accompanied by manager, Karabo Mothulwe and Coach Roger Barrow. Tennis: Kevin Anderson (singles), Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie (doubles). Manager and coach John Laffnie de Jager will add support to this team. Triathlon: Mari Rabie, Kate Roberts and Hendrik de Villiers. Manager and coach Carol Austin will accompany the team. Weightlifting: Darryn Anthony. He will be supported by manager and coach, Aveenash Pandoo. Aquatics additions: Sebastien Rousseau and Jan Venter will compete in the 4 x 200m free relay.Sapa
