World number 19 Jordy Smith finished in a comfortable second place during his Round One heat of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, on Thursday.

Competing in icy one-metre surf, Smith was defeated by Adriano de Souza, but advanced ahead of fellow South African Travis Logie, who finished third. Both Smith and Logie will surf in Round Two when the competition resumes.

The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay is the fifth stop on the ASP World Tour and includes the world’s top 45 full-time touring male professional surfers plus three wildcards. The event has a ten day waiting period but requires only four full days of competition to be completed.
