Shute Shield hots up
Posted Fri, 09 May 2008

West Harbour will be eyeing the possibility of moving into second place on the New Shute Shield table when they host Northern Suburbs at Concord Oval on Saturday.

Round Seven has thrown up some great match-ups with many eyes in particular on the first versus last clash between Sydney University and Penrith which many are predicting to be a closer game than their positions on the table dictate.

West Harbour v Northern Suburbs, Concord Oval, 15.10 (all kick-offs local time)

Only Sydney University has a better attacking record than West Harbour who are priming themselves to move further up the ladder when they host Northern Suburbs at Concord Oval.

Like Uni, Wests have scored four tries or more in five of their six matches to date, and are averaging over 33 points per game.

Northern Suburbs are looking for a return to form after dropping three of their last four matches which has seen them slip from first to seventh.

Easts returned to the winning circle last week with a convincing victory over Souths, snapping a two-game losing streak and with new recruit Vitori Buatava starring at the base of the scrum the Beasts will take some beating.

Sydney University V Penrith, University Oval No.1, 15.00

On paper this match looks to be a foregone conclusion however with Penrith capable of scoring lots of points this contest could be very exciting.

Sydney University sit on 29 out of a possible 30 competition points and remain undefeated following their come-from-behind victory over Gordon last weekend.

Penrith on the other hand remain winless, however they sit sixth on the try-scoring list proving that if they get their defence in order they could prove a handful for the defending champions.

Warringah v Eastwood, Pittwater Rugby Park, 15.00

Despite a scare against Penrith last weekend, Warringah sit in second on the Shute Shield ladder but have a tough assignment at home against Eastwood.

The Rats have dropped just two matches this season, losing both by six points or less, with their tight defence (ranked second in the competition) the backbone of their 2008 campaign.

Eastwood's season has struggled to get going however after scoring 80 points in the last two weeks including a big win over Randwick, the Woodies are capable of causing at upset on the road.

Randwick v Parramatta, Coogee Oval, 15.00

Parramatta were desperately unlucky to go down to Warringah last week and will give themselves every chance of victory against Randwick at Coogee Oval.

Going into the last round in second, Randwick turned in a disappointing performance against Eastwood and will be keen to atone for that at home.

Parramatta's narrow loss ended a two-game winning streak, however they still remain just six points
outside the top six and capable of springing an upset at Coogee.
