Glenwood High School of Durban became the third South African school to win the Sanix World Rugby Youth invitational Tournament when they beat Tarbes of France 39-0 in the Final on Monday.
Sixteen schools - eight from Japan and eight from abroad, took part in the ninth such tournament at the Global Arena in Fukuoka, Kyushu. It was held during Golden Week when four public holidays combine to produce one of the three big holiday seasons in Japan - Showa Day which commemorates the death in 1989 of the former emperor, Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi) which celebrates the 1947 constitution, Greenery Day (Midori no hi) and Children's Day (Kodomo no hi).
It was a golden week for Glenwood who defeated two of the other strong sides on their way to winning. In fact their closest encounter was with St Benedict's School of London in a pool match. Glenwood won that 14-12. In the semifinal they beat Gisborne Boys' High 15-8.
To get to the final Tarbes beat St Edmund's of Canberra.
