Proteas cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has signed for the Welsh county Glamorgan.

Gibbs will be joining the Welsh outfit in June after he's completed his commitments in the newly launched Indian Professional League.

Glamorgan who have already acquired Australian paceman Jason Gillespie were on the lookout for a high profile international batsman to bolster their top order.

Mathew Maynard, Glamorgan's cricket manager, said the club's supporters were keen to see the record-breaking batsman who struck six sixes in one over during last year's World Cup.

"I am really excited to be joining Glamorgan for the Twenty20 Cup in 2008, which will also be my first experience of county cricket," said Gibbs.

"Matthew Maynard's plans and vision for Glamorgan, and for Twenty20 cricket, were a key factor in my decision to join the club and I am hugely excited about the role I can play for the side.

"I will be coming straight from our Pro20 competition in South Africa and then the Indian Premier League, so I will be in the perfect Twenty20 mindset to help drive the Glamorgan team toward Finals Day, and hopefully some silverware."
