Housing and townhouse developments are taking off in Kimberley, a town which prior to 2001 was growing at well below the national average, with a stagnant property market and an abundance of undeveloped land.

Comments Leon Pienaar, area principal for Pam Golding Properties: "Over the past three years residential developments have taken off, while three new shopping centres have been approved - one of which is already completed.

"Having come off such a low base, although prices have appreciated by up to 100 percent over the past two years, homes in Kimberley are still affordable, with those in the price brackets of R250 000 / R350 000 and from R400 000 to R650 000 most in demand," says Pienaar.

"There's an extremely strong demand from the emerging middle class buyer - many of whom are government employees - and we are currently involved in plans for a new 90 unit residential development which will cater for this market."

Pienaar says the top end of the market is mainly being serviced by senior government staff and black business executives. Reflecting a growing demand in this area of the market, over the past few months PGP sold three sole mandate properties priced at R1-million, R1.2-million and R2.1-million respectively. "The R2.1 million sale is one of the highest prices obtained for a residential property in Kimberley. Set on a property of 1350sqm, the home comprises five bedrooms, three living areas, four bathrooms, lapa, swimming pool and double garage," adds Pienaar. He says that other properties priced at R2.7-million and R2.6-million are currently being marketed, with enquiries received from potential buyers.
