Public hearings on Eskom's proposed 53 percent tariff hike will take place in Pretoria only, the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Charles Hlebela said Tuesday was the final day for written submissions and that public hearings, where the public were invited to make oral presentations to the regulator, would take place on 23 May.

He said the oral presentations were only being held in Pretoria "mainly due to the urgency of the application".

"We are discussing it to see if there are any other means to reach wider groups," he said.

The regulator had received around 10 written submissions on the matter each day since it had invited written comments on 8 April.

A final decision on the proposed hikes would be made on 6 June, Hlebela said.

Earlier this month, Nersa said it had shortened the processing of Eskom's application as it was made during a time of an electricity emergency.

It said though it was necessary to shorten the time of processing the application, the due process would not be compromised.
