Singer and actor Steve Hofmeyr was discharged from hospital on Saturday and was doing fine, spokesperson Amanda Singleton said after rumours had been going around about Hofmeyr's death.

"He is at home watching rugby and Natasha [Sutherland, his wife] is taking care of him," Singleton said.

She said she had no idea where the rumours of his death had come from.

In August last year similar rumours had been going around in the form of text messages saying Hofmeyr had died in a car accident.

"I can't imagine what kind of sick mind someone must have to start a rumour like that," Singleton said.

Hofmeyr had undergone an emergency operation on Sunday to repair a perforated colon and had remained in a Johannesburg hospital until Saturday.

He recovered quickly and Beeld reported on Saturday he had been teaching the nurses how to play the guitar, and sang to another patient in his hospital room.
