Cape Town's fundamentalist Christian deputy mayor Grant Haskin has been offered a personal tour of the Sexpo exhibition now on in the city, after he claimed it undermined family values.
Haskin said in a statement on Friday that the increase in abuse and sexual exploitation of women and children was "a worrying reality".
"We remind Capetonians of these realities at this time specifically since Sexpo is currently being presented," he said.
"The ACDP has committed itself to establishing Cape Town as a family-friendly city, with the moral regeneration of our communities as a key element, yet this Sexpo clearly risks undermining that objective."
Sexpo organiser Silas Howarth said in response that Haskin's comments were "unfortunate".
"Should the honourable councillor wish to come and familiarise himself with the actual event, he would note that Sexpo is a celebration of sexuality and advocates responsible sexual behaviour by consenting adults," he
said.
Exhibitors ranged from sexual health workshops and sex education stands to "the naughtier kind".
He said Haskin's "disingenuous" association of abuse and violence against women and children with Sexpo was "the worst kind of politicking".
"I would like to extend an open invitation to the deputy mayor of Cape Town to Sexpo and I will personally provide him with a guided tour," Howarth said.
The Sexpo, which is on at the city's Convention Centre until Sunday, also includes a rodeo ride on a large pink penis, and an Australian artist who does paintings with his dingaling.
One of the paintings is of Haskin's council colleague, Mayor Helen Zille. The painting was reportedly done from a photograph, not from life.
A handful of Christians demonstrated outside the venue on Friday afternoon, claiming the exhibition was a "celebration of perversion and lust".
