Legislation doing away with gender discrimination in old age pensions was approved by the National Assembly on Friday.

The Social Assistance Amendment Bill provides for age equalisation for state old age grants.

In terms of the bill, men aged 60 to 64 years will be able to apply for the old age grant.

Once signed into law, it will see just over 450 000 men qualifying for social assistance.

"The Social Assistance Amendment Bill marks a milestone in achieving the constitutional obligation of non-discrimination, as well as facilitating access to social security," Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya said.

The measure will be phased in with men aged 63 and 64 qualifying in 2008/09, 61 and 62 in 2009/10, and 60 in 2010/11.

The bill now goes to the National Council of Provinces for approval.

"We are on track and I am pleading to all men out there to exercise patience until the process is finalised," Skweyiya said.
